“What in the world is going on Katherine?” Jeremy asked, confused. “Have you had a marriage proposal from someone? Who is George? I don’t understand half of what Alex was saying – were you- are you untouched? Your husband didn’t…ah… well…?” His face was flushed red at the intimate questions he was asking in the silence of the house; however, she was pretty sure that her own cheeks were even hotter with embarrassment.

“That is none of your business,” she uttered primly, smoothing the horrible black crape dress she had on.

“I’m making it my business,” Jeremy retorted. “I’ve had you push me away repeatedly after I’ve tried to show my interest, yet now I find out that some other man has asked to marry you?”

“I’m not marrying anyone.”

“Yet?” he countered. “The term is ‘I’m not marrying anyone… YET.’”

“Jeremy, you are bold and aggressive…” Katherine began placatingly but could see he was in a real snit of a temper.

“Apparently not bold enough,” he exclaimed.

“I’ve tried to court you, tried to be nice to you, tried to give you space because I know you are in mourning but by golly – I have never met anyone like you in my life.” His chest was heaving, and his eyes blazed with unrestrained emotions. His hands clenched and released at his sides as he stared at her.

“Katherine, what exactly do you even want?”

“I want to be…” and she hesitated, feeling suddenly anxious.

“What? You want to be… what?”

“I want you to quit snapping at me, first of all, Jeremy Bryant! I’m not your sister, wife, or family member that you can just bully around! I’m tired of bullies and want someone that cares for me. That will protect me and love me for who I am – not for what I can bring them! I want someone that gives me a choice in my life.”

They stood there staring at each other. Katherine felt like an emotional dam had burst forth and she couldn’t seem to stop herself. The tears were falling down her cheeks as she careened verbally onwards ahead.

“I’m tired of being told what to do and when. I want power over myself for once,” she said brokenly, clasping her hands together over her heart, as if to calm down the runaway muscle.

“I want someone to hold my hands. Someone that wants to be in the same room as me, and someone to laugh with me. I’m tired of being alone or being pushed away by the person who was supposed to hold me close,” she wailed, shoving a fist in her mouth painfully as she drew in a shaky breath.

“I’m afraid of making another mistake, Jeremy… and I want a baby of my own someday,” she whispered her deepest, darkest secret she thought she’d buried inside her soul until she held little Destiny in her arms. My goodness she wanted a child of her own someday!

“I want to be the one to give you all of that, Katie,” Jeremy admitted in a quiet voice; suddenly all the bluster in him was gone.
